This sheet in 1:72 scale is tied to the landings on the island of Walcheren and to the British hardware committed in the Netherlands in the years 1944 and 1945. Besides tanks it covers amphibious vehicles as well, without which the fighting in a flooded landscape could not be managed.
The island of Walcheren closed off the approach to the port of Antwerp, and as long as the defenders held it, supplies for the advancing formations could not converge through there. In the autumn of 1944 the Allies therefore first breached the dikes, and the resulting flood turned the interior of the island into a shallow lake. The attack was then led by landings from the sea supported by amphibious carriers. The Dutch battlefield thus became for several months a setting where ordinary tracked hardware lost its advantage and vehicles able to swim took precedence.
The machines of this campaign moved in salt water and in mud, so a model will get plenty of weathering. Apply the markings, therefore, before you start on deposits and salt bloom, and then let part of the drawing be covered over, though not all of it, so that it stays legible. On the sheet metal sides of amphibious vehicles a design holds best on perfectly smoothed varnish.
