The real subject

The SU-122 was a Soviet self-propelled gun of the Second World War built on the chassis of the T-34 medium tank. In place of a rotating turret it carried a fixed armored superstructure with a 122 mm howitzer built into it. Its use matched that: the SU-122 was to break up fortifications and hard targets by firing from shorter range and to accompany advancing tanks, not to fight long duels with armored vehicles. The low fixed superstructure gave the vehicle a squat silhouette that a model captures well even in a small scale.

Building and painting tips

Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder back; in this scale every remnant shows on a small surface. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts and the instructions from the manufacturer. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. Apply the paint in thin coats so that the fine detail is not lost. A single-color finish is brought to life by light edge highlighting and shading of the recesses; on small models contrast does more for legibility than a number of shades.
