This item is a model of a work of the Czechoslovak heavy fortifications listed under the designation MJ-S 15 with the code name Zavora. It is published by ROP o.s. as part of a series that gradually maps the individual works of the border fortifications in one small, uniform scale. The material, the number of parts and the dimensions of the finished replica are stated on the box.
The code of a fortification work is not random. It is made up of the abbreviation of the construction sector in which the work was ordered, of its serial number within that sector, and of the code name that was used for quick orientation in the field and in the documentation. Code names were usually taken from the surroundings, the shape of the ground or some local feature, so in themselves they reveal quite a lot about where the structure stood. For a collector that has a practical consequence: the code lets the works be arranged in the same order in which they stood in the line.
The heavy fortifications were built in Czechoslovakia from the mid-1930s under the Directorate of Fortification Works. These were reinforced-concrete casemates with several embrasures, with a thickened front wall covered in earth and with the main weapons firing to the flank so as to cover the neighboring work. Depending on how important the site was, the works differed in resistance, in the number of embrasures and in their equipment.
What helps the model most in terms of color is layering the gray. Lay down a lighter base, a slightly darker tone in the shaded areas and the lightest touch on the edges. Add a very thin wash into the embrasures and a light hint of green where moss would grow on the real structure. If you are building the whole collection, keep the same procedure on every work, otherwise the models will look as if they came from different lines. The job is rewarding even for a modeler without an airbrush, because it can be done with a brush.
The model is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
