A decal sheet from the Hungarian manufacturer HAD models for a model of the Ilyushin Il-62M airliner in the colors of the Hungarian carrier MALÉV, prepared for 1:144 scale. The product is not a kit but an accessory for a model bought separately. The decals are waterslide.
The Il-62 is a Soviet four-engine jet airliner for long routes. All four engines are mounted in pairs on either side of the rear fuselage and the tail surfaces form a pronounced T. A typical feature of the design is the retractable tail support strut at the rear of the fuselage, which secured the aircraft on the ground against tipping backwards during loading. The Il-62M version is a later pattern with updated engines and a greater range. In the service of eastern European carriers, including the Hungarian MALÉV, this type was the mainstay of the longest routes for many years.
An airliner with a large area of smooth fuselage calls for careful preparation of the surface, because every irregularity under a decal shows. Varnish the model with gloss clear coat, lay the long stripes on in one piece and line them up against a fixed point, ideally the window band. Soak the surplus water up with a paper tissue and press the decal out from the center toward the edges, so that no air is left under it. At the transitions to the engine nacelles and around the tailplane use a decal softener. Choose the final varnish, semi-matte or gloss, according to the nature of the livery.
