About product

Veneer deck USS Arizona BB-39 1941, 1:700 scale, Artwox Model

This is not a kit of the ship but an aftermarket accessory. The package holds a thin wooden veneer with the printed laying of the deck planks and with a self-adhesive layer on the back, cut to the shape of the decks of the Dragon 7053 kit. Once it is glued on, the model has a surface of real wood with its own pattern of grain, which neither injection-molded plastic nor a decal can imitate faithfully.

The real subject

The USS Arizona was a battleship of the Pennsylvania class, brought into service in 1916. The main armament consisted of twelve 356 mm guns in four triple turrets. In the second half of the 1920s she went through an extensive rebuild in which she received new superstructures with tripod masts, strengthened deck armor and anti-torpedo bulges. The 1941 state matches her last period of service in the Pacific. The ship was lost on 7 December 1941 at Pearl Harbor and her wreck is today a war memorial.

Gluing tips

The basis is the preparation of the plastic. It is a good idea to sand the original engraving of the planks on the plastic deck away to nothing, so that the veneer is not lifted anywhere, and then to degrease the area with alcohol: grease from fingers tends to be the most common reason an edge comes away over time. Lay the veneer on dry first and check the fit against the barbettes and the feet of the superstructures. Remove the backing film from the adhesive layer in sections, never all at once, and lay the veneer from the longitudinal axis toward the sides, so that it does not ripple anywhere. Apply the pressure with a finger through soft cloth and press the edges down with a smooth wooden stick.

Who the deck is for

  • Modelers who are building the matching kit and want a realistic deck without laboriously painting individual planks.
  • Builders of ships in 1:700 scale who are bothered by the flat engraving of decks on a plastic part.
  • Those who combine veneer with photo-etched accessories and aim at a higher level of detail.
  • Patient beginners: gluing it on is easy, but it does not forgive mistakes in the fit.

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory, a self-adhesive wooden deck that replaces the plastic deck of a kit. The kit itself has to be obtained separately.

No, the veneer has a self-adhesive layer on the back. All that is useful is degreasing the plastic properly with alcohol and perhaps super glue to press the corners down afterwards.

It is not necessary, as the pattern of the planks is printed. Some modelers merely give the area a matte varnish for protection and add a dark wash between the planks to bring out the gaps.

No. The veneer is cut to the shapes of the decks of the Dragon 7053 kit; with another manufacturer the outlines of the superstructures differ.
