About product

German 300 l drop tanks in 1:144 scale

A resin accessory set from the Czech maker Brengun, meant for builders of aircraft in 1:144 scale. It is not an airplane kit but separate castings of jettisonable fuel tanks that hang under the fuselage or the wing of a model. In a scale this small a resin casting holds the smooth body of revolution without the parting seam that a plastic part would need laborious sanding to remove.

The real subject

Jettisonable drop tanks extended the range of German aircraft in the Second World War beyond what the internal fuel tanks allowed. A tank of roughly three hundred liters was among the sizes in common use and was carried on a ventral or underwing pylon. Once it was empty the tank was dropped so that the machine would not lose speed or agility. On period photographs the tanks are a frequent and conspicuous feature, so a model with a tank fitted looks more convincing than a bare airframe.

Building and painting tips

First wash the castings in soapy water, because mold release residue stops the paint from adhering. Cut the casting block off with a saw as close to the body as you can and level the surface with fine abrasive paper, ideally wet. The tank is bonded with super glue, and once it has set, fill the joint. The tanks were painted either in the camouflage scheme of the aircraft or in a simple single color, so the set takes both approaches. After painting, a light wash into the panel lines and a subtle highlight on the filler neck help.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German Second World War aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers who want to bring a model closer to a long-range configuration
  • Collectors who dislike a coarse plastic part with a pronounced parting seam
  • Anyone interested in combining resin accessories with a plastic kit

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The box holds only the castings of the drop tanks, which you hang on a kit you already own.

It is a type of tank used by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Judge the fit against your own subject.

Use super glue and reinforce the joint with a short wire pin drilled into both the tank and the pylon.

They were used both in the camouflage scheme of the aircraft and in a simple single color, so either option is defensible.
