Brengun 1:144 SBD Dauntless — vacuum canopy

A vacuum-formed (vacu) clear canopy from the manufacturer Brengun for a model of the carrier-borne dive bomber SBD Dauntless in 1:144 scale. A replacement for the canopy from the matching kit: it is thinner, clearer and reads more delicately. It is a detail accessory, not a complete model.

The real subject

The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a carrier-borne dive bomber of the US Navy in the Second World War and played a key role above all in the Battle of Midway. The glazed canopy covered the pilot and the rear gunner.

Use and building

  • Carefully free the canopy close to the edge with a sharp knife or with shears for photo-etched parts.
  • Vacuum-formed parts are thin, so work with a margin and sand the edge right back.
  • Glue it with a cement intended for canopies, so that the clear part does not go milky.
  • The framing of the canopy masks and sprays easily; a closed and an open version are usually available.
