The sheet from the manufacturer ETA diorama is a paper accessory for building interior dioramas and vignettes. According to the name it is intended for several scales at once — 1:16, 1:24 and 1:35 — so its usability depends on how large a cutout from the sheet you use and with how large figures you combine it. The sheet is therefore not tied to a single fixed scale.
Real fabric has too coarse a texture in a small scale and its pile comes across as oversized. Printed paper, on the contrary, carries a fine pattern that matches the size of the scene, and it has no thickness of its own that would lift a carpet above the floor. The result then comes across as a textile laid down, not as a glued-on piece of cloth.
Cut the carpet out with a sharp scalpel along a rule. At the edges consider whether to leave a straight edge or to suggest fringes — these can be created by fine nicks with a scalpel around the perimeter and then teasing them out with a dry brush. Glue with a thin layer of PVA glue applied over the whole area, otherwise the corners will lift once dry. Dampen the paper slightly before gluing if you need it to follow the unevenness of the floor or to bend over a step.
A new carpet looks out of place in a wartime or historical scene. Mute the color with a very thinned filter, add darker marks in the places that are walked over and fine dust with pigment at the edges and under furniture. A lifted corner or slight waving in the middle gives a scene movement. At the end matte clear coat unifies the sheen with the surroundings.
