About product

1:16 Turned barrels for MG 13k machine guns for the Pz.Kpfw. I Ausf. A/B (Aber)

This is not a model of the tank but an add-on set for the build. The package holds two turned metal barrels of the short version of the MG 13k machine gun, that is the armament of the German Pz.Kpfw. I light tank in the Ausf. A and Ausf. B versions. The set is intended for a large-scale 1:16 kit, where the barrel is a markedly visible feature and the difference between injection-molded plastic and turned metal shows at first glance. The manufacturer is the Polish firm Aber, which has long specialized in turned barrels and photo-etched accessories.

The real subject

The Pz.Kpfw. I was a two-man light tank of the 1930s with a small rotating turret and purely machine gun armament of 7.92 mm caliber. The Ausf. A and Ausf. B versions differed in their engine and the length of the hull, but the layout of the turret and its armament stayed the same, so one set covers both forms. The pair of thin barrels is among the details hardest to mold on a model: they are long slender parts that are difficult to keep straight and in line in a plastic mold.

Tips for working it

First degrease the metal parts with alcohol or mineral spirits, otherwise paint will not hold on them and will flake off during handling. Cut the plastic barrels off with a sharp knife at the root and, if needed, carefully widen the hole in the turret with a drill so that the metal part seats with no play and without stressing the plastic around it. It is glued with super glue or two-part epoxy resin; ordinary cement for plastic will not bond metal. Before painting apply a primer meant for metal surfaces and only then the covering shade, the final shading and pigments.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building German interwar and early war vehicles in the large 1:16 scale.
  • Builders who want to replace the plastic barrels with a more precise metal part.
  • More experienced modelers used to working with metal and super glue.
  • Collectors of models worked out in detail for a display case or a competition.

The set is an accessory for a build, not a model in its own right. The parts are supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an add-on set of two barrels that the modeler fits to a kit in 1:16 scale that is already built or part-built.

With super glue or two-part epoxy. Cement for plastic will not bond metal. Degrease the surface beforehand.

Yes. Apply a primer meant for metal surfaces to the bare degreased metal, otherwise the paint chips off during handling.

According to the name it is intended for the Ausf. A and Ausf. B versions, which had the same armament in the turret.
