A decal sheet from Aviattic with the five-color lozenge pattern for the lower flying surfaces of models in 1:24 scale, in the rich factory fresh version. The lighter lower palette completes the darker upper variant into a full camouflage.
Working with a full-width sheet is a different discipline from laying ordinary decals. First measure the pattern out against a plan of the model, cut the strips with a sharp blade along a steel ruler and lay them on the model gradually — on the lower surfaces best from the leading edge toward the rear. A perfectly smooth gloss base is a condition: a thin decal lets every detail show on it and, with a softener, it will obediently flow around the ribs and the protrusions. Patience pays off; the result is covering indistinguishable from sprayed camouflage — only considerably more faithful.
Work in smaller sections, push the excess water out with a soft spreader from the center toward the edges and let the softener work without touching. Once thoroughly dry, clear coat the surface according to the intended finish — on a fresh factory machine reach for a semi-matte varnish.
