The concrete mixer in 1:24 scale from the German manufacturer MAiM is a prop that reveals at once what is going on in your scene. A construction machine of this kind is among the most striking accessories that can be placed in a diorama in a larger scale, because the viewer reads from it the story of a house under construction, a wall being repaired or a yard where concreting is under way. It is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted.
1:24 scale is the domain of automotive and garage dioramas, so the mixer goes superbly with models of trucks, vans and construction vehicles, and equally with a scene of a home workshop or a rural yard. Stand it beside a heap of sand made from loose material, add a few planks and a bucket and you have a construction corner complete. It also works as a base of its own for a figure of a worker.
Before painting, wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, remove any marks left by casting and apply a primer. Fill out a base in machine green, orange or gray with chipping on the edges, rust around the drum and above all a dried concrete crust, because a light gray paste or pigment laid on around the mouth of the drum will turn the machine into a working veteran. Bring out the metal parts of the wheeled frame with graphite burnishing.
