The Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 was the competition version of a mid-size sedan, which the brand entered in the World Rally Championship at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. It combined a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, the technical basis from which the brand's following generation of rally cars also grew. The African events of the time, among them the Ivory Coast rally, were extremely long, ran over rough gravel and dusty sections and put the emphasis on durability and reliability rather than on outright speed. The cars therefore carried increased ground clearance, heavy underbody panels and auxiliary lights.
On rally cars the quality of the paintwork and the accuracy of the decals are what count. First clean the parting lines off the body, apply a primer and spray the base color with an airbrush in thin coats. Apply a gloss varnish before the decals, settle them with a decal softener so that they follow the edges and pressings, and varnish over them once they have dried. Finish the interior and the engine bay before you join the body to the floor pan. With the African specification it pays to spend time on the weathering: a fine layer of dust on the lower part of the body, in the wheel arch and behind the wheels does more for credibility than any detail. Apply the pigments sparingly and fix them only after checking the look.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
