An injection-molded plastic kit of the French Renault Estafette light van in the service form of the Gendarmerie, in 1:24 scale from the French maker Heller. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; to build it you need thin cement for polystyrene, abrasive paper and paints. The 1:24 scale gives plenty of room for the cab and for the details of the bodywork, so it is a rewarding subject both for a first larger commercial vehicle model and for a diorama with a period French street.
The Renault Estafette was a light van with front-wheel drive and a cab over the front axle, produced from the end of the 1950s to the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. The front drive and the low-set floor gave it an unusually large and easily accessible cargo space for its day at small external dimensions. The vehicle was built in many coachwork and service forms, and in the colors of the French gendarmerie it was part of the usual equipment of patrols and of technical support.
Before the build, wash the sprues in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent — remains of mold release agent worsen the adhesion of the paint. Cut the parts off with a cutter and sand the remains of the gates back; never snap them off. Paint and fit the cab and the interior before you close up the body, because afterwards you cannot reach them. Spray the body over a primer, as dark blue service shades hold markedly better on a primer and need fewer coats. Mask the glazing with liquid or tape before painting. Apply the decals onto gloss varnish and, once dry, go over them with a matte or semi-matte varnish according to the look you want.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
