About product

Subaru 360 in 1:24 - a Hasegawa kit

An injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa in 1:24. The boxing is devoted to the racing form for the first Japanese Grand Prix in 1963, specifically for class C-I. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, with instructions and a decal sheet. The number of parts, the extent of the decal schemes and the way the engine section is rendered are given in the enclosed instructions. Given the dimensions of the real subject, even in 1:24 this is a very compact model.

The real subject

The Subaru 360 was a Japanese minimalist car of the kei category, built from the end of the 1950s. The characteristic rounded body with small wheels and the engine at the back earned it a nickname referring to a beetle. The design was subordinated to saving weight and to a low price: a two-stroke twin of small displacement, simple suspension and a light body. It was precisely the low weight that made this car a surprisingly capable rival in the lowest racing classes. The first Japanese Grand Prix in 1963 was among the founding events of Japanese circuit racing, and production cars divided into classes by engine displacement took the start in it.

Building and painting tips

A small body with prominent curves will not stand coarse filling, so work with fine sanding sponges and check the shape against the light. Racing cars of the period usually had a simple paint job with a few race numbers, so the final impression is made above all by a smooth and even coat. Spray the base color with an airbrush in thin coats over primer. Finish the interior and the cage before the body is joined to the floor. The glazing on this type is large and prominent, so set the windows in with glue for clear parts or with clear varnish, so that they do not cloud. Keep the weathering light; the car looks best in a clean state with the seams gently brought out.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese kei category cars in 1:24
  • Anyone interested in the beginnings of Japanese circuit racing
  • Modelers looking for a quick and undemanding build with a striking result
  • Builders who want to fill out a period starting grid on a diorama

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Thanks to the simple shape and the small extent it is among the more approachable car models. Watch out above all for smooth paintwork and for clean glazing.
