A free-standing turbocharger in 1:24 scale for builders of car models. It serves to give forced induction to a naturally aspirated engine from a boxed kit, or to replace an existing simplified turbo with a part with crisper housing shapes. The manufacturer is the Polish brand Yamamoto Model Parts.
A turbocharger consists of two spiral housings on a common shaft. The hot side is spun by the exhaust gases, the cold side compresses the intake air and sends it through an intercooler into the intake. The size designation, here GT20, is used in tuning practice to tell the size of the wheel apart and with it the power band the turbo works in, as smaller units respond earlier and suit smaller displacements. On a model a turbo is a rewarding element: it sits high, it is clearly visible and it breaks up the uniform surface of the engine.
If the set consists of more pieces, assemble them dry first and glue them only afterward, as with forced induction the exhaust manifold, the housing and the outlet into the pipework all have to line up, or the whole installation ends up turned. Wash the remains of mold release agent off the parts, separate them from the casting blocks with a fine-toothed saw and level the cut surfaces with a file. They are glued with super glue; for the joint of the two housings, meter it out with a pin so that it does not flow over into the grooves. The oil feed and return can be suggested with thin tubing or wire, and the hole for it should be drilled with a micro drill before you paint the part. The cast-iron hot side looks good in dark gray with a faint rusty cast, the aluminum cold side in matte steel.
This is an accessory to a model, not a kit in its own right. The parts are supplied unpainted; glue, paints and tubing are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
