A wooden ship kit of the steam launch Louise in 1:26 scale from the range of the Constructo brand. It is not a plastic model — the hull is built by the classic technique from a keel board and transverse bulkheads onto which planking of thin wooden strips is glued. Once the hull is finished, the deck, the superstructures and the fitting of the small hardware follow. The model tends to be rewarding precisely because most of the interesting detail on a steam launch is clearly visible. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts, the woods used and the dimensions of the finished model are stated in the enclosed list of parts.
A steam launch is a small open or partly covered vessel powered by a steam engine with a boiler. These craft spread in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the steam engine had been made small enough to fit into a boat only a few meters long. They were used for transport on rivers and lakes, as harbor and pilot boats and for pleasure outings by wealthier owners. Their typical features are a slim hull, a tall funnel roughly amidships, an open seating area and varnished wood.
Set the bulkheads at right angles and keep checking that the hull stays symmetrical. Dampen or warm the planking strips and pre-shape them before gluing, so that they do not press on the joints. Apply wood glue thinly and wipe any excess off at once, otherwise light patches will be left after the stain. Sand the hull through finer grits and finish the surface with wood stain, oil or a clear varnish. Degrease the metal fittings and spray them if need be. The funnel and the engine area take a dark wash well, but with varnished wood it is better to work with restraint so that the model does not look dirty. Toward the end, reckon with several small parts for which tweezers come in handy.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, stains and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
