About product

Eduard 1:32 Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk landing flaps - photo-etched landing flaps

A photo-etched brass set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for 1:32 scale. Landing flaps are the high-lift surfaces on the trailing edge of the wing. Of all the accessories for this aircraft the set has the narrowest focus: it deals with one specific part of the wing, and in a way injection-molded plastic cannot. The flaps of the real aircraft are thin sheet metal with ribbed internal structure, whereas the plastic part is many times thicker because of the mold and the edge shows at first glance. This is not a kit and not a model, but an accessory.

How it differs from the other sets for the same aircraft

The manufacturer offers three separate photo-etched sets for this machine in 1:32 scale: the exterior one for the outer surface of the airframe, a gun bay set and this flap set. The flap set is the only one that lets the wing be built with the flaps lowered - on the real aircraft that is the usual position of a machine standing on the ground. It differs from the mask sets by the same manufacturer in principle: a mask adds no part at all, whereas this set replaces a plastic part with metal.

The real subject

The Curtiss P-40E is a single-engine fighter with a liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 engine and a radiator under the nose; in British nomenclature the Kittyhawk. The landing flaps on the trailing edge of the wing were lowered for takeoff and landing, and on a parked machine they were often left down. That is exactly why lowered flaps have become a popular build feature that gives the model a sense of movement.

Building tips

The plastic flap usually has to be cut away from the wing and the trailing edge thinned with a file. Cut the etched parts off against a hard surface, make the bends in a bending tool and make sure the ribs sit square - a flap folded crooked is the most common mistake. Glue it with cyanoacrylate, degrease the brass beforehand and spray it with primer. Fit the flap at the very end of the build so that it does not get bent while you handle the model.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to build the model with the flaps lowered
  • Builders of large scales, where thick plastic is the most obtrusive
  • Anyone interested in American fighters of the Second World War
  • Advanced modelers with some practice in bending etch

This is an accessory for a kit, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

As a rule yes. For the metal flap to come into its own, the plastic part has to be separated and the trailing edge of the wing thinned.

Injected plastic cannot be molded at a scale thickness, so the flap looks like a thick slab. Etched sheet matches the real thickness of the material and shows the internal ribbing as well.

No, it comes as unpainted brass sheet. Use a primer before painting so that the paint holds.

Yes. The exterior set and the gun bay set deal with different parts of the model, so they do not overlap.
