About product

F-117A Nighthawk late version BE 1:32 - 3D instrument panels from Red Fox Studio

Colored elements with printed relief on decal paper. They are not glued into the model from the Trumpeter kit: they are soaked off in water, slide on the wet glossy base and, once dry, hold the shape of the buttons, the bezels and the areas of the displays. For an enclosed cockpit of this type it is a solution that saves hours of work with the finest brush.

What makes this cockpit special

The space around the seat is narrow and deep and the instruments are not only on the front panel. A substantial part of the impression is made by two side consoles running along the seat, full of switches and control boxes, and by the strips under the edges of the tub. The panel itself is mixed in the late form: alongside classic round instruments there are screens on it, which is a visible step on from the early machines. There is one seat, so everything takes place in a single field of view, and its belts stand out in a cockpit this enclosed. The canopy has thick frames, so it pays to think about whether you will build the model with the cockpit closed; with it open, the whole interior is visible right down to the floor.

Soaking, positioning and decal softener

The most common mistake with these sets is soaking them too long. The film releases while still in the dish, curls up and then cannot be maneuvered in a narrow cockpit. Dip the element for a few seconds, take it out and let it release on the paper. Apply the side consoles as long strips in one piece and lead them from the rear end forward, so that they do not ripple. On a shaped edge use decal softener by drops and let the film settle by itself; only when it has given way should you press it down with a damp cotton swab in a light rolling motion, never with pressure from above. Draw the water off from the center toward the edges and leave the dried elements untouched overnight. A final thin coat of semi-matte varnish evens out the surface and protects the relief during further handling.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of large models with an open cockpit.
  • Modelers who want worked-out side consoles, not just the front panel.
  • Users with experience of decals and decal softener.

This is a modeling accessory, not a kit. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package. Check in advance that it matches your kit.

FAQ

The designation is not explained here. The manufacturer uses it on several sets in different scales; check the contents and the difference from the variant without BE against the box and the enclosed instructions.

Lead it in one piece from the rear end forward over a slippery base. Only then fine-tune the position and draw the water off from the center toward the edges.

On shaped edges. Apply it by drops, let the film settle by itself and only once it has given way roll it down lightly with a damp cotton swab.
