This set from the manufacturer SX-Art holds self-adhesive stencils intended for spraying the color scheme on a model of the British Gloster Gladiator biplane in 1:32 scale. These are not canopy masks: the stencils define the shapes that are airbrushed onto the model, so the camouflage boundaries come out precisely and can be repeated. The designation part 5 means that the manufacturer offers more separate sheets for this type. The set is cut for the ICM kit.
The Gloster Gladiator was a British single-seat fighter biplane of the 1930s and the last machine of its kind in front-line Royal Air Force service. It had a fixed landing gear, a radial engine in a short cowling and a mixed structure with fabric covering. It also served with other operators and still saw combat in the opening phase of the Second World War.
Camouflage sprayed freehand is hard to repeat in this scale: the shape of the blotches wanders, the transition between the fuselage and the flying surfaces does not line up and the second model no longer looks the same. A stencil holds the shape even across panel lines and leading edges. Let the surface cure properly, degrease it and press the stencil down with a toothpick or a stick, above all around its perimeter — a leaking edge is the most common cause of paint creeping under it. Spray thin coats and perpendicular to the edge, not at a sharp angle. A sharp transition comes from a perfectly pressed stencil, a softer one from lifting its edge very slightly with a shim. Remove it shortly after the paint has set, slowly and at an angle back over itself, so that the finish is not lifted. On a biplane expect the struts and bracing to make the work harder, so it is sensible to paint the fuselage and the flying surfaces before joining them.
