Die-cut self-adhesive masks from the National Insignia Series line of the Polish maker Pmask, for a model of the Mustang in British colors in the large 1:32 scale. The insignia are sprayed through the template, so they become part of the finish and no carrier film is left behind. It is in large scales that the difference shows most, because on a broad matte surface the edge of a decal would be conspicuous.

The real subject

The Mustang came about to a British order, and the Royal Air Force was its first operator. Early aircraft with the Allison engine mainly flew tactical reconnaissance and strikes on ground targets at low altitude, while later forms with the Merlin engine served as escort fighters. The shape and the color proportions of the British national insignia changed several times during the war.

Use and tips

• Apply the template only to a fully cured camouflage finish.
• Press the edges of the template down carefully, so that paint cannot creep under them.
• In a large scale, spray in several passes and in thin coats.
• Take the mask off before the paint has fully cured.
