Three cut films for the crosses of the Bavarian D.III fighter, 1:32 scale. The cut matches the parts of the Roden kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the spring of 1918 the German air service ordered the existing Iron Cross to be exchanged for the Balkenkreuz, that is a bar cross with straight, squarely cut arms. The change did not happen all at once. Units received the order, but they often painted the new shape themselves right at the airfield, so machines with the old and the new marking stood side by side on one airfield. The width of the arms was narrowed once more in the course of the year, which is a guide for the modeler in placing a machine in time.
The Pfalz D.III was built by the factory in Speyer and it differed from the Albatros types in a monocoque fuselage glued up from two layers of plywood. The surface was therefore smooth, with no creases of fabric, and it was polished to a silvery shade called Silbergrau. The aircraft climbed more slowly than rival types, but it stood up to a steep descent and was popular on attacks against observation balloons.
On a smooth plywood surface the film holds superbly, but it is precisely there that every imperfection of an edge stands out most. It pays to lay on a very fine first coat of paint, let it become tacky and only then cover fully. The set holds three stencils for the national insignia. The delivery does not include the model, brushes or paints; it reckons on your having the finish done.
Placing the machine in time rests precisely on the form of the marking. A model with the Iron Cross belongs to the winter and early spring of 1918, a model with straight arms to the summer and autumn of the same year, and the remaining equipment of the aircraft should match. It pays to decide that before reaching for the film, because a change afterwards means sanding the whole area back.
