About product

FLY 1:32 SAAB J-29B Tunnan: a plastic kit

This is an unassembled plastic kit of the Swedish Saab J 29 jet fighter aircraft in the B version, in 1:32 scale. The large scale allows the cockpit and the landing gear bays to be worked out in detail, and once finished the model looks very impressive in a display case. The manufacturer FLY concentrates on less usual subjects that the big brands do not make; kits of this type tend to be so-called short-run ones, so count on more careful dry fitting of the parts than with mass-produced models.

The real subject

The Saab J 29 was the first Swedish production jet aircraft with a swept wing and one of the first European types of this concept at all. It flew at the end of the forties and, thanks to the bulky barrel-shaped fuselage into which the engine was built, it earned the nickname Tunnan, meaning the barrel. It was produced in several versions differing in armament, equipment and the treatment of the wing; the B version differed from the original form in an increased fuel load and in the ability to carry stores under the wing. Machines of this series served with the Swedish Air Force throughout the fifties.

Building and painting tips

With short-run kits it pays to try each part dry first and only then to glue it; a little extra sanding of the mating surfaces is a normal part of the work. Glue with a thin plastic cement that will wick into the joint. Sand the fuselage joints down once they are dry and restore any panel lines lost in the sanding with a scribing needle. Finish and paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays before you close the fuselage. Spray a primer before painting: every unevenness shows on a smooth light surface, so the preparation pays off. Apply the decals over gloss clear coat and fix them with a softener, then unify everything at the end with the degree of sheen you have chosen.

Who the model is for

  • For those interested in first-generation European jet aircraft
  • For modelers who want a large model for a display case
  • For more advanced builders with experience of short-run kits
  • For collectors of less usual subjects outside the mainstream

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is supplied as an unassembled and unpainted kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package.

Rather for the more advanced. Short-run kits call for dry fitting the parts and sanding the mating surfaces, which is not needed with mass-produced models.

Above all in an increased fuel load and the ability to carry stores under the wing. The external differences from other versions are small, so it pays to build from source material.

The number of parts and the number of color schemes are stated on the box and in the instructions of the kit.
