Self-adhesive masks for painting the road wheels of the British Chieftain main battle tank in 1:35 scale. This is not a kit or a replacement part — the masks merely mark out the area of the rubber tire band so it can be sprayed separately from the rim. The set is cut for the Chieftain kits from Takom; the designations of the kits it is intended for are given in the name, so compare which box you have at home before ordering.
The Chieftain uses Horstmann suspension: the road wheels are not sprung individually but grouped in pairs into bogies with coil springs, bolted to the side of the hull from the outside. There are therefore six wheels in three bogies on each side, with return rollers, the drive sprocket at the rear and the idler wheel at the front. The wheels in a pair are very close together and only a narrow slit is left between them — a place a brush cannot reach and where an airbrush sprays everything except what it should. The second peculiarity is that the side of the vehicle is covered by sizeable skirts. The running gear is therefore not visible in full, but that will not save the modeler: what is visible is visible close up and in sharp contrast with the light lower edge of the skirt.
The commonest mistake with bogie suspension is leaving the painting of the wheels until the bogies are assembled and bolted to the hull. You then cannot get into the slit between the paired wheels and the inner flanks of the wheels stay in the hull color. The second mistake is drawing a line freehand on a wheel held only in the fingers — the wheel slips and the line wavers. The third is trying to paint over a botched edge with the rim color: a second coat emphasizes the unevenness instead of hiding it. The routine with a mask forestalls all of that: paint the wheels while they are loose, press the mask down all the way around, spray in thin coats square to the surface, lift it off while the paint has flashed off and only then assemble the bogies and hang the skirts.
This is a masking aid, not a model. Neither paints nor the kit are included in the package. Go by the details on the box for the contents of the sheet.
