The X-craft midget submarines were British craft of the Second World War, only a few meters long and manned by a crew of four. Instead of torpedoes they carried large charges along their sides, which were laid under the hull of an anchored target. The best-known action of these craft was the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in a Norwegian fjord, after which the ship was left out of action for long months. Work inside such a craft and the preparations before setting out were done by hand and in cramped quarters, and a scene with the crew says more about that than the hull itself.

Paint in layers: the base tone, shadow in the folds, and finally highlights on the raised areas. Leave the face until last and shade it gently. Shades used on the surroundings as well will tie the figure into the scene.
