A masking set for painting the road wheels of the British FV432 tracked carrier in 1:35 scale. The set holds no building parts: the masks stick onto finished wheels and hold the edge between the rubber tire band and the rim while spraying. It is cut for the FV432 kit from Takom.
The FV432 is a carrier with the drive sprocket at the front and the idler wheel at the rear, between which runs a row of road wheels of identical, fairly small diameter with a rubber tire band. Unlike tanks, where wheel diameters differ along one side, the road wheels here are practically identical and the only difference is between them and the drive sprocket and idler wheel. That has a practical consequence: the masks for the running gear are interchangeable with one another, but the toothed drive sprocket and the idler wheel will not be covered by them. The tire bands are also narrow, so every millimeter by which a mask overruns or fails to seat tells on them a great deal. The side plates shadow part of the running gear, but the lower arc of the wheels stays the best visible part at display-case eye level.
With a tire band as narrow as the FV432 has, you can afford to do without an airbrush. With a mask a brush will manage the rubber too, but two conditions apply: thin the paint almost to the consistency of milk and apply it by stippling square to the surface, not by stroking along the edge of the mask. A stroke along the edge literally sweeps the paint under the mask. The covering power of gray and black shades tends to be weaker, so count on three thin applications instead of one thick one — it dries faster and the edge stays sharp. An airbrush will do the same in two passes. The final surface should be matte, at most lightly satin in the places where rubber would have soaked up oil.
