About product

1:35 German Brummbar — Eduard photo-etched set

This item is a set of photo-etched metal parts by the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the German self-propelled gun Sturmpanzer IV, nicknamed Brummbär, in 1:35 scale. Do not confuse it with the masking set that comes out under the same name — masks only serve for painting and are thrown away after use, whereas an etch is glued onto the model permanently. The set is also not a vehicle kit but an accessory to a model you already own. On armor, photo-etched parts most often solve the areas where plastic is unbearably thick.

The real subject

The Sturmpanzer IV was built on the chassis of the Panzer IV medium tank and carried a short large-caliber howitzer in a fixed armored superstructure, intended for fire against fortified targets and buildings. The design was heavy and slow, with a limited traverse of the gun. The vehicle went through several production series that differed in the shape of the superstructure, the vision ports and the details of the running gear — which is why it always pays to compare the set with the particular variant you are building.

Building and painting tips

Metal sheet parts benefit a model above all where the real thing is thin: grilles, brackets, eyes and sheet covers. Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and sand the tabs down. Degrease the metal with alcohol and do not touch it with your fingers. Make straight folds in a bending tool; on larger parts a brief annealing over a flame helps — the metal softens and stops springing back. Glue with super glue, and with a slower-setting epoxy on large areas. Always spray the metal with a primer, otherwise the paint cracks. On armor it then pays to weather in stages: a dark wash in the recesses, a dry brush on the edges and finally pigments on the lower areas and the running gear, where there is the most dust and mud.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German armor in 1:35 scale.
  • Modelers bothered by the thickness of plastic sheet parts.
  • Those who have a bending tool, tweezers and photo-etch experience.
  • Builds aimed at detailed weathering and dioramas.

The set contains photo-etched parts only. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This item is an etch — metal parts that stay on the model. Masks are peeled off after painting.

Photo-etched sets for armor typically solve thin sheet parts. The exact extent is stated on the box.

Tweezers, a scalpel, a hard surface and ideally a bending tool. Without one, straight folds can be made between two razor blades.
