About product

Aber 1:35 grilles for the Pz.Kpfw. V Panther Ausf. A/D tank (a photo-etched set)

This is not a model of a tank but a detail accessory for a kit. The photo-etched set replaces the grilles of the intake and outlet openings of the engine deck on plastic models of the Panther in the Ausf. D and Ausf. A versions in 1:35 scale. The layout and the shape of the openings on the Panther changed between versions, which is why separate sets exist for early and for late machines. Photo-etched metal offers the right thickness and a genuine see-through effect that a plastic part cannot imitate. The manufacturer is the Polish firm Aber, a long-standing specialist in photo-etched and turned metal accessories.

The real subject

The Panther was a German medium tank of the Second World War, armed with a long 75 mm gun and protected by a steeply sloped glacis. The Ausf. D was the first production version, and the Ausf. A followed with a reworked turret, a new commander's hatch and a ball mount for the bow machine gun. Both early versions went into action from 1943, and their engine deck is densely broken up by cooling openings, which are among the most conspicuous areas of a model seen from above.

Building and painting tips

Sand or cut away the original plastic grilles and level the openings so that the photo-etched part seats without gaps. Separate the parts with a scalpel and make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue in drops along the edges, so that glue does not get into the pattern. Degrease the photo-etched parts before painting and spray them with a primer for metal. A dark wash, dust pigments and faint traces of oil around the outlets work superbly in the grilles, because that is exactly where dirt settled in service.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the early versions of the Panther in 1:35 scale
  • Enthusiasts of a faithful look to the engine deck
  • Modelers who dislike thick plastic grilles
  • More advanced builders with experience of photo-etched parts

The accessory is supplied as a photo-etched set, unpainted. A base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

For the early Ausf. D and Ausf. A versions. Late machines have a differently arranged engine deck, for which the corresponding separate set suits.

It is not. This is a photo-etched set of grilles that is fitted to a plastic kit of the Panther in 1:35 scale.

Usually yes. The original parts are sanded or cut away and the openings cleaned up so that the photo-etched part seats flush with the deck.

Once painted, apply a dark wash into the pattern and add dust pigments. Around the outlets faint traces of oil and soot suit it.
