About product

Photo-etched engine deck grilles for the Jagdpanther in 1:35 scale

This set from the Polish maker Aber is a photo-etched add-on set for a kit of the Jagdpanther tank destroyer in the Ausf. G1 and G2 early versions that you already own. It is not a model and nothing can be built from it on its own. It solves a single, but very visible detail: the grilles above the engine deck. In injection-molded plastic these grilles are inevitably solid, because a mold cannot produce fine mesh that you can see through. A photo-etched brass part, by contrast, is thin and genuinely open, so space opens up beneath it and the surface of the hull stops looking like one fused block.

Why photo-etched parts instead of plastic

Photo-etch pays off on grilles more than on other details. The thickness of the sheet matches the scale, the openings are open, and the edge stays sharp even after painting. The difference is obvious at first sight from above, which is exactly the angle from which a model in a display case is looked at most often. A wash also runs into the openings, so the engine deck shades itself into relief on its own.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts off the fret with a sharp scalpel against a hard surface rather than with pliers, or the sheet will deform. Level off the remains of the tabs with a fine file. Degrease the brass with alcohol or acetone before gluing; a fingerprint will reliably keep paint from sticking. The parts are glued with superglue in a minimal amount, ideally applied with the head of a pin, as excess would run into the openings of the grille and spoil the whole effect. A primer made for metal is needed before painting, best in two very thin coats. If a part has to be slightly curved, bend it over the straight edge of a bending tool or a razor blade, not with your fingers.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of armored vehicles in 1:35 scale who want a faithful engine deck
  • Modelers who already have the Takom kit and are looking for a targeted detail
  • Those with experience of working with photo-etch and superglue
  • Builders for the display case, where the model is seen above all from above

This is an add-on set for a kit you already own. The model, paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a photo-etched add-on set for a kit you already own; no model can be built from it on its own.

Its thickness matches the scale and the openings of the grille are genuinely open, which injection-molded plastic does not allow.

With superglue in a minimal amount. Ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on brass.

Yes. Degrease the brass and apply a primer for metal, or the paint will not hold on the smooth sheet.

It is intended for the Takom kit.
