This is a printed paper sheet from ETA diorama intended for scenes in 1:35 scale. It holds no plastic or resin parts and it is not a decal that would be soaked in water. The motifs of hotel illuminated signs and hoardings are cut out of the sheet and glued straight onto the surface of a model building, onto a frame of profiles or onto a plastic plate.
A decal is transferred onto a smooth clear-coated surface and blends with it. A paper sheet, on the contrary, gives the signs a thickness of their own, so a hoarding on a facade stands out from the wall the way a real advertisement does. The signs can be backed with thin plastic or card to give a full-bodied board that can be fitted on a bracket and projected out at right angles from the building over the pavement.
Work with a sharp modeling knife with a new blade and cut along a rule on a cutting mat, so that the edges are not frayed. For gluing to paper and card surfaces PVA glue applied in a thin layer works well, and on plastic and clear-coated surfaces a matte glue for paper. With thin paper it is better to avoid super glue, as it soaks through and makes stains. It is a good idea to rub the white cut edges over with dark paint or a marker, otherwise they stand out on a model. Spraying with matte clear coat unifies the surface and removes the paper sheen, and careful work with a thinned wash or a dry brush adds dirt and age. A sign can be slightly tilted, folded over an edge or partly damaged – imperfection looks more convincing in a scene than a perfectly straight rectangle.
