About product

Japanese officer in 1:35 scale for the Kaiten II model (Aerobonus)

This item is not a kit but a separate resin figure in 1:35 scale from the Aerobonus figure range by the manufacturer Aires. It is intended to round out an already built model of the Japanese Kaiten II manned torpedo, or a display scene or diorama in the same scale. Compared with the figure of an ordinary sailor this is an officer, so it differs in dress and in the fittings of the uniform.

The casting and its preparation

A resin casting holds finer and sharper detail than injection-molded plastic, but it is more brittle. The parts tend to be joined to casting blocks, which should be cut off with a fine saw or a sharp cutter, with the mark of the cut leveled with a file and abrasive paper. Before gluing, wash the figure in lukewarm soapy water, so that the mold release agent comes off, as paint would not hold on it. Glue the joints with cyanoacrylate glue; ordinary cement for plastic does not work here. Sand the resin with your airways protected and preferably with wet paper, so that no dust is raised.

Pose and painting

The pose is set by the casting and cannot be changed, so try the figure dry in the exact place where you want it and adjust the ground under its feet if need be. Start painting with a thin primer, which evens the surface out and improves adhesion. Then come the base tone of the uniform and the flesh, and after that shading and highlights, so that the shape reads in 1:35 scale. A dark wash brings out the folds and the edges, and the small items of the uniform come out when painted with a fine brush at the very end. It pays to finish the face separately, while the figure is still not glued down. Even the surface out with a matte clear coat at the end.

Who the figure is for

  • Builders of Japanese naval equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who want a scene with a figure in the display case, not just the model on its own
  • More experienced modelers used to resin and cyanoacrylate glue
  • Figure painters looking for a fine casting in a small scale

The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It does not. It is a separate figure in 1:35 scale; the model is obtained separately.

This figure represents an officer, so it differs in dress. The particular pose is shown by the illustration on the packaging.

Cyanoacrylate glue and, once the casting has been washed, a primer plus acrylic or oil paints.

Rather not. Resin is brittle and calls for cutting off casting blocks, washing and accurate work with a brush.
