This is neither a model nor a set of replacement parts. It is a masking sheet that serves a single purpose: to separate the rubber tire band on the road wheel from the rim and put a sharp border between them. The set is cut for one particular M4 High Speed Tractor kit from Hobby Boss, so the shape of the cutouts matches the diameter and profile of the wheels from that mold. It need not fit wheels from another kit of the same vehicle.
The M4 artillery tractor has a long running gear and a matching number of wheels. When the rubber-to-rim border is lined by hand, every wheel means several minutes of concentrated brushwork, then a check, then a repair of the places where your hand wandered. Across a whole running gear that easily turns into a full evening. With a mask the work breaks down into three short operations: stick it on, spray over it, take it off. Sticking on and taking off are mechanical steps that call for neither a steady hand nor a magnifier. The saving does not grow evenly, either, but with the number of wheels: the more a vehicle has, the larger the share of the work the mask takes over.
Clean the mold seams and flash off the wheels first, or the mask will not seat and the paint will bleed under it. Lay down the primer and the rim color, let them dry thoroughly, and only then mask and spray the dark tire color. Apply the paint in thin coats at lower pressure, because a heavy wet coat gets under the edge of a mask faster than anything else. Take the mask off while the paint has flashed off, not after it has cured completely.
