1:48 F-102A Delta Dagger undercarriage bays - pre-cut templates for the landing gear cutouts of this tailless interceptor.
Responsibility details are not available.
The pre-cut templates fit the openings for the retractable landing gear of this delta machine. They save the work of cutting tape by hand into complicated shapes, which are hard to trace on a large triangular wing.
The Delta Dagger was a tailless interceptor with a large triangular wing. The prototype did not break the sound barrier until the designers rebuilt the fuselage according to the so-called area rule: they narrowed it in the middle and widened it at the rear, which produced its characteristic pinched shape. It carried guided missiles inside a fuselage bay so that they would not disturb the airflow, and an onboard system working with ground stations guided them. It served with home air defense and in Europe and Asia, and later ended its days as a pilotless target.
On tailless machines the bays for the gear legs take up a large part of the underside, so every inaccuracy shows a great deal. Apply the inner tone, let it cure and seat the template all the way around without creases. Lay the paint on in a fine mist so that too much wet material does not get under the edge. A single grain of dust under the edge is enough to give the finished line away.
