An aid for painting the road wheels, not a kit and not replacement parts. The masks cover the rim and expose the rubber tire band, so the edge between the shades is made by the cut of the sheet. The set is prepared for the wheels from the Takom kit. With this range that is an essential detail: the wheels of the same type of vehicle tend to have a different diameter and different rim detail from different manufacturers, and a sheet from one set will not fit another.
The M46 is the first of the Patton family and differs from chassis on bogie suspension in having six rubber-tired road wheels on each side, each sprung individually on a torsion bar, plus return rollers, the drive sprocket at the rear and the idler wheel at the front. The wheels are large, identical and evenly spread along the whole length of the hull, so in the view from the side they form a regular row in which every deviation in the width of the tire band is immediately legible. It is precisely this regularity that makes the M46 a rewarding but unforgiving object for lining by hand. Twelve large wheels is enough work to make it worth painting them all at once and off the model, while they can still be handled.
Once the mask is off comes a dark wash into the groove around the tire band and up to the ribs of the disc. Then pigment dust on the underside of the hull, on the fenders and between the wheels, where most of it collects. Apply mud unevenly, mainly on the inner faces of the wheels, by the idler wheel and into the corners between the track and the hull, rather than evenly across the whole flank. The running surface of the tire band wears to a lighter gray tone on a large wheel and is clearly visible on it, so light dry-brushing around the outer circumference pays off more here than on small running gears. Do not forget the return rollers; they too have rubber tire bands and unfinished ones leap out.
Paints, glue and the kit itself are not included in the package. Check before ordering that your kit matches the one the set is cut for.
