A set of photo-etched parts from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the M4A3 medium tank with a 76 mm gun, 1:35 scale. Etched sheet is used everywhere injection-molded plastic would have to be unnaturally thick for technological reasons — on grilles, brackets, eyes, covers and sheet-metal strips. The result is a model that looks correct in scale when seen up close. The plastic model is not included in the package.
The M4A3 was the version of the M4 medium tank powered by an eight-cylinder Ford gasoline engine. The form with a 76 mm gun received a longer gun barrel with a higher muzzle velocity and a larger turret, which is clearly visible on a model too compared with the early machines with the short 75 mm gun. Later vehicles of this family were built with a welded hull and with wet stowage for the ammunition. In building a model these differences show up in the shape of the turret, in the placement of the hatches and in the details on the upper surface of the hull.
Cut the photo-etched parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and level the remains of the tabs with a file. The tool brackets and eyes are small, so have fine tweezers ready and glue with cyanoacrylate glue in drops applied with a pin. Before gluing, the surface has to be cleared of the molded plastic details that the etched part replaces — sand them flush, otherwise the new part will not seat. Degrease the metal and spray a base coat for metals. In the final patina you will appreciate that dust pigments and muddy effects on the running gear catch well in etched structures.
