A masking set for painting the wheels of the Marmon-Herrington armored car. It is not a model or a resin replacement for the wheels — the masks cover the rim so the tire can be sprayed in a shade of its own with a sharp edge. The set is cut for the kit from IBG.
The Marmon-Herrington is a wheeled armored car, not a tracked vehicle, so what you have here is not a row of small rollers but four large individual wheels with an off-road tread. Each of them is a separate, clearly visible object on the model: the tire is tall, wide and has a pronounced tread pattern, while the metal rim is relatively small. It is precisely this ratio that makes painting by hand difficult — the brush has to follow a long circle right up against a broken tread, and when it slips there is nowhere to hide the mistake. Wheeled vehicles also tend to be built with richer weathering on the tires (dust, mud, worn tread edges), so the base areas have to be properly separated underneath all that. Many of these cars also carry a spare wheel mounted on the hull, where it is visible in full, from every side.
On wheeled armored cars the wheels are fitted practically at the very end, because during the building and painting of the hull they are merely in the way and their pin breaks easily. The masking step therefore belongs in the closing phase: paint the wheels as a separate group, fit the masks once the base has cured and spray the tires, then add the dust weathering — and fit the finished wheels to the axles only once the hull is painted and weathered. Do the spare wheel in the same batch as the running ones, or the tire shade will not match and the difference will be obvious at first glance.
This is a masking accessory, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
