RPG Model 1:35 Mk 15 Mod 31 SeaRAM is a plastic kit of a shipboard close-in weapon system. It is not a model of a whole ship but of a standalone weapon system.
Responsibility details are not available.
This kit in 1:35 scale captures the standalone shipboard SeaRAM weapon system in the Mk 15 Mod 31 designation. It is not a model of a ship or of part of one in a usual ship scale: the large scale is chosen deliberately so that the detail of the mount, the sensor head and the launcher can come out. The finished system is a display piece in its own right and it is also a rewarding subject for modelers who otherwise have no way into naval topics.
SeaRAM is an American close-in weapon system intended to destroy anti-ship missiles and other targets in the final phase of their flight. It is based on the proven standalone mount of the Phalanx gun system, which has its own radar and electro-optical sensor and works autonomously, but instead of a rotary cannon it carries a launcher for eleven missiles of the RAM family. The combination of its own sensors and missile armament gives it greater reach than a purely gun-based solution. The system is installed on deck positions of surface ships and, thanks to its autonomy, it does not require complex integration with the ship's systems.
The model has few large parts and a lot of small detail, so it pays to build it in subassemblies: the mount separately, the radar cover separately and the launcher separately. Leave the sensor cover and the launcher apart until they are painted, so that you can get everywhere with a brush and an airbrush. Glue with thin cement for plastic; a primer is a necessity in a large scale, as it reveals every imperfection of the surface. In color terms this is equipment in light gray naval tones, where the effect comes from fine modulation of the surfaces, discreet panel shadows and light salt and rust traces around the attachments. Overdoing the weathering does not pay off: this is a maintained system, not an abandoned wreck.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
