An add-on set of photo-etched parts for building the M2A1 ammunition cans used with the 12.7 mm machine gun. It is not a kit of a vehicle and not a finished model: these are small accessories used on kits and in dioramas of modern American vehicles. The set has a universal purpose, so it is not tied to one particular kit.

What the set is for

Ammunition cans belong to that group of props that make a scene believable. They lie on fenders, in a cargo bed, on the deck of a carrier or loose on the ground by a position. A plastic molding tends to be massive and without detail of the lid and the hinges; photo-etched metal, by contrast, holds a thin wall, a crisp edge and legible latches. The set also serves away from a particular vehicle, as part of the equipment of a position, a supply point or a figure scene.

Tips for working with small parts

With parts this small the most common loss happens not while gluing but while cutting them out of the fret. Cut with a scalpel on a hard surface and hold the part with a second pair of tweezers, otherwise it will spring away. Work over a light-colored surface with no gaps. Carry out the assembly in the order floor, walls, and only at the end the lid and the hinge, so that the finished box does not distort. Dispense the glue with a pin, as a thin drop from inside the joint. It pays to paint only after assembly, in a thin coat over a primer, so that the edges are not flooded. A light wash in the seams and fine wear on the edges will do the rest.
