1:35 Music Disc

1:35 Music Disc — printed music records for a diorama

The sheet from ETA diorama brings designs of music records for scenes in 1:35 scale. It is printed paper meant to be trimmed by the modeler, not a kit and not a waterslide decal. In a diorama it serves as small civilian furnishing: records and their sleeves belonged in living rooms, clubs, stores and barracks, and on a model they tell you at once what period and what setting you are looking at.

An accurate trim decides it

Round and square shapes are harder to trim than a rectangular poster — on a regular shape every inaccuracy shows. Cut a square sleeve against a metal ruler with a sharp blade and check the right angle; cut a round disc with short strokes around the circle rather than in one sweep, and then true the edge with fine abrasive paper held flat. Darken the white cut with a pencil or a thin stroke of paint, or a pale rim will appear once it is glued down.

Assembly, gluing and the surface

A sleeve with a record looks best when it has volume: back it with thin plastic or card and paint the side edge. You can let the disc stick out from under the sleeve or lay it separately; on the smooth face a thin coat of gloss varnish gives the impression of a smooth surface, while the paper sleeve should stay matte — it is exactly that difference in sheen that makes the scene readable. Glue thinly with PVA or matte paper glue and brush the glue onto the surface. Finally add fine dust with a dry pigment and a weak shadow around the outline so that the elements do not sit on the base like stickers.
