Masks for the wheels of the Nebelwerfer rocket launcher in 1:35 scale

These are masking elements for wheels, not a model nor a spare part. They are applied to the wheels from a particular kit and allow the rubber tire and the wheel to be sprayed separately, with a sharp boundary around the whole perimeter. The set is cut for the kit of the towed Nebelwerfer rocket launcher from the Lion Roar company. Because it is a towed artillery piece on a light two-wheel carriage, the wheels are very clearly visible and a roughly drawn tire on a finished model catches the eye at once.

The weathering that follows

Masked wheels form a base on which patina builds well. Once the masks are off, let the paint cure and move on to a unifying matte clear coat. Only then comes a dark wash into the recesses of the wheel, which brings up the spokes and the molded details. Apply dust with a pigment from the margin of the tire toward the center, not evenly, because the most of it holds where the wheel meets the ground. On a towed piece it pays to emphasize the line of mud along the lower part of the tire as well. A clean edge will not be lost under that layer; on the contrary, it gives the whole order.

Practical notes

• Apply the mask only onto a cured base, otherwise it will bite into the paint when lifted.
• Apply the paint in thin coats at a right angle to the wheel.
• Deal with weathering only after the matte clear coat, as the pigment can then be regulated.
• Store the remainder of the sheet flat and away from sources of heat.
