A set of masks intended for painting the road wheels of the South African Olifant Mk 1B main battle tank. It is not a kit or a resin replacement wheel, but an aid that shields the rim on the model and leaves only the rubber tire band exposed. The cut matches the wheels from the Hobby Boss kit, which is why the target kit is given in the name with this range.
The Olifant comes from the line of the British Centurion and carries six large rubber-tired road wheels on each side, that is, twelve on the whole model. That is a great many surfaces to line with a brush and just as many opportunities for a hand to waver. The essential point is that the upper run of the track and a considerable part of the running gear disappear behind side plates. Only a strip above the ground stays visible, along with what shows through the gaps, so it pays to concentrate on the outer faces of the wheels and on the lower edge, which the viewer will see from every angle. The inner faces of the wheels deserve at least a rough base coat, because they are seen through the wheel well.
The Olifant served in a dry, dusty environment and that is the clue for the whole weathering. Once the mask is off, first pick out the edge between tire band and rim with a dark wash, which will also run up to the bolts of the rim. Then comes light pigment dust, applied mainly to the underside of the hull, into the inner space behind the plates and into the places where fine sand would collect. Mud in the form of thick cakes suits this less well than a fine deposit. The running surface of the tire band wears to a lighter shade, so go over it lightly with a dry brush around the outer circumference, so the wheel does not look fresh from the factory.
Paints, glue and the kit itself are not included in the package. Check before ordering that your kit matches the one the set is cut for.
