A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the German Pz.Kpfw. III medium tank in its first production form, the Ausf. A. It is not a kit or a replacement part, but an aid that marks out the rubber tire band against the rim on the wheel. The set is cut for the Bronco kit.
The A version is the exception among the forms of this tank. It carries only five large road wheels on each side hung on coil springs, whereas the following forms moved first to eight small wheels with leaf springing and, from the E version, to six wheels of medium diameter on torsion bars. The running gear of the A version therefore shares neither wheel diameter nor spacing with any later version — masks intended for an ordinary six-wheeled Panzer III will not fit here. For the modeler that has a practical consequence too: the wheels are large, so the rubber tire band forms a long arc that cannot be managed in a single stroke of the brush, and wide gaps are left between the wheels, through which the whole row is clearly visible from the side.
On large wheels the border between tire band and rim is long and the eye travels along it as along a circle — every hesitation of the hand shows on it as a ripple. The larger the wheel, the larger the area of rim that can be sprayed, shaded and weathered without worry once the mask is off. On the shelf that makes the difference between a running gear that reads as part of the model and one that looks hastily touched up. On a competition table the running gear is also one of the first places a judge looks, because haste is hard to hide there.
This is a modeling accessory, not a kit. Paints, glue and the model itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
