A set of fine photo-etched metal parts in 1:35 scale intended for detailing a model of the Russian BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle in its early configuration, that is without add-on armor kits. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory set: it replaces and supplements those parts which cannot be cast in injection-molded plastic in a realistic thickness, that is grilles, loops, brackets, sheet-metal covers and small external equipment. The result is a model that stands up even to macro photography.
The BMP-3 is an amphibious tracked infantry fighting vehicle developed in the Soviet Union and taken into service at the end of the 1980s. It differs from the older vehicles of the BMP series in its layout with the powerplant at the rear and in the exceptionally strong armament in its turret: a combination of a low-pressure 100 millimeter gun, which also serves as a launcher for guided missiles, and a rapid-fire 30 millimeter autocannon, completed by machine guns. Early production vehicles have no add-on armor kits, so the hull and the turret have cleaner and smoother outlines than the later upgrades.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and never nip them off, because otherwise the photo-etched part will be deformed. Make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool, or else between the jaws of flat pliers; a light score on the reverse side helps to suggest a sharp edge. Degrease the surface with alcohol before gluing. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, on larger parts preferably in a gel consistency, or with a two-part epoxy, which gives time to line things up. Apply a base coat meant for metal surfaces to bare metal, otherwise the paint will chip during handling. The plastic details that the photo-etched parts replace usually have to be sanded off first.
This is an accessory photo-etched set, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
