An accessory for modelers, not a kit of the vehicle. The set holds photo-etched parts in thin metal sheet that replace the thick plastic imitation of the grille on the engine deck. The photo-etched part has a realistic thickness and is see-through into the inside of the hull, which injection-molded plastic never achieves. The accessory is supplied by the SBS Model brand and is intended for the Ausf. A and Ausf. D versions. The set is intended for the Meng kit.
Sd.Kfz. 171 is the service designation of the German Panther medium tank of the Second World War. The Ausf. D version was the first production form and the Ausf. A followed on from it; both share a number of features of the engine deck layout, among them the grilles over the radiators. These grilles are among the most conspicuous places on the model where the thickness of the plastic shows.
Cut the photo-etched parts off on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel or photo-etch scissors, not by breaking them out. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades held up to the fold line. Degrease the sheet with alcohol before gluing. It is glued with cyanoacrylate applied with a pin in a minimal amount; on larger surfaces two-part epoxy is safer. Apply a metal primer to the metal, otherwise the finish will peel while you handle it. The original plastic grille usually has to be sanded flush; the procedure differs according to the kit used, so dry-fit the part first.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and is not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. The set is cut for one particular kit, so please check the fit with yours before buying.
