A self-adhesive masking set for painting the wheels of the Sd.Kfz. 6 half-track tractor in 1:35 scale, cut for the kit from Bronco. The mask covers the rubber part of the wheel and the rim is sprayed over with the vehicle color; lining the circular border by hand with a brush is done away with. It is neither a kit nor a part of the model.
The most common reason masking on wheels does not come off is not a bad mask but haste. The paint under the mask has to be dry right through, not merely dry to the touch. With acrylics the surface film forms within tens of minutes, but the layer beneath it goes on curing — and if you stick a mask onto it at that point and tear it away an hour later, a piece of the paint will leave with it. The sensible routine is to let the coat stand overnight and only then mask. Between the individual passes of the vehicle color, by contrast, a short pause is enough — long enough for the surface to flash off so the next coat does not dissolve into it. Speeding the drying up with a hairdryer does not pay on masked wheels: heat tenses the masking material and softens the adhesive. Better to let it run at its own pace; the time saved is lost on repairs anyway.
Paint the wheel in the rubber shade, let it dry thoroughly, apply the mask and press it down, spray the rim over in thin coats and remove the mask as soon as the paint has flashed off. Only then fit the wheels to the model.
