About product

1:16 British helmet MK1 — a British helmet for figures in 1:16 scale

This is an accessory for figures in the large 1:16 scale, not a model and not a whole figure. The British steel helmet Mk I belongs among the most easily recognized pieces of headgear of all: a shallow bell with a wide flat rim cannot be mistaken for anything else, and precisely for that reason it gives away at once on a figure which army the figure belongs to. In 1:16 the part is large enough for careful cleaning up and painting to tell on it.

The real subject

The British steel helmet with a shallow bell and a wide horizontal rim was introduced during the First World War and in gradually modified forms served British and Allied units long afterward as well. The rim protected mainly against fragments falling from above, which matched the trench style of fighting the helmet was designed for. The inside consisted of a simple suspension and a chin strap; helmets were commonly completed with netting, a cloth cover or camouflage material, which is a rewarding opportunity for a modeler to vary them.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

Rid the part of the casting residues, level the mating surface and degrease the surface. Try the fit on the figure's head dry and, if need be, sand the inside out slightly, so that the helmet sits at the right angle — with this type the set is crucial, as a helmet put on too high comes across as unnatural. Glue with super glue, fill the seam with filler and sand it over. Apply a thin base coat before painting. The helmets had a matte, usually finely grained surface, so suppress any sheen. After a base khaki or olive tone, a dark wash under the rim and at the strap and a fine rub-through on the edge of the rim, where the paint wore off most, will help. Netting or a cover can be suggested with a thin textile bandage or with a modeling compound.

Who the accessory is for

  • For figure modelers working in the large 1:16 scale.
  • For modelers who convert a figure into British or Allied equipment.
  • For builders of busts and vignettes, where the headgear is the main detail.
  • For anyone who is not satisfied with the helmet supplied with a basic figure.

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a figure. Paints, glue, filler and the figure itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a separate accessory for figures; a figure has to be bought in addition.

The designation refers to the Mk I type. Helmets of this shape were used in gradually modified forms in both periods; check the exact determination of the variant on the packaging.

Check the number of pieces on the packaging.

A thin textile bandage or very thinly rolled-out modeling compound works well, applied only after the helmet has been fitted onto the figure.
