This detail set from the Polish manufacturer Aber holds turned metal barrel tips for the German machine guns MG 08 and MG 08/15 in 1:35 scale, three pieces of each type. It is not a kit but a small accessory with which the plastic end of a barrel is replaced. It is precisely here that the difference between plastic and metal is most visible: a plastic part has a blunt, solid end, whereas turned metal offers a thin wall and a real bore. Six pieces in the package are enough for several vehicles, figure groups or dioramas.
The MG 08 was the standard German heavy machine gun of the First World War, derived from the Maxim design and of 7.92 mm. It fired from a heavy mount and called for a crew of several men. The lighter MG 08/15 version came about in an effort to give the infantry a weapon that one soldier could carry; it received a bipod, a stock and a pistol grip and became the most widespread automatic weapon of the German infantry of that time. Both types also appeared in a later period and in the second line long after the end of the First World War.
Cut off the plastic end of the barrel at the point where the cooling jacket widens and bore the opening out with a micro drill to the diameter of the metal part. Glue the tip in with cyanoacrylate glue and align it along the axis of the weapon. Degrease the metal before painting and go over it with an adhesion primer. The cooling jacket of the MG 08 can be picked out with a dark wash, while the tip itself is left metallic with a gentle sooting.
