An add-on set of photo-etched parts for the side skirts, the Schürzen, for a kit of the German Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tank in the Ausf. G late production version, 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the tank and not a finished model: it is an accessory meant for a kit you already own. The set has a universal purpose, so it is not tied to a single kit manufacturer.
The side skirts were thin steel plates hung on a carrying rail along the sides of the hull and around the turret. They served as standoff protection against shaped-charge projectiles and against anti-tank rifles. That is precisely why they were very thin, and exactly that is the problem with plastic moldings, which are markedly oversized even on good kits. The skirts were also routinely bent, lost or removed from vehicles in the field, so credibility matters here twice over.
With long flat parts flatness decides it. Before working, lay the sheet on a glass plate and check whether it is rippled from production; small waves are flattened by running a smooth roller over them. Try the hangers and rails dry first, and only then with glue, and let the whole assembly cure on a flat surface. If you want the impression of a well-used vehicle, bend one or two plates slightly, or leave one out altogether, because metal will take that without cracking, unlike plastic. Paint in a thin coat over a primer, so that the thickness of the edge stays apparent, and suggest wear down to the metal with a light rub of silver paint along the edges and leading faces.
