1:35 Sioux – painted buffalo hide is a printed paper sheet for dioramas in 1:35 scale from the firm ETA diorama with the motif of a painted buffalo hide. It is not a kit and not a decal – the motif is cut out of the sheet and fitted into a scene.

The range of printed accessories from ETA diorama covers subjects outside military machinery too, and this sheet is one of them. It brings the motif of a painted buffalo hide in 1:35 scale, that is an element for scenes from the setting of the North American prairies. Painting such a pattern by hand at this scale is work for several evenings and the result tends to be crude; printing manages it in a level of detail unreachable with a brush.
In a display a hide comes into its own spread out on the ground, stretched in a frame, thrown over a branch or propped against a structure. Precisely because it is a flat object with a bold pattern, it works well in the foreground of a composition, where the viewer sees the whole of it. The 1:35 scale matches ordinary figures, so the size of a piece against a person comes out naturally and nothing needs recalculating.
Cut the motif out with a scalpel leaving a small margin and then fine-tune the outline – an irregular, slightly frayed edge is desirable with a hide, while a straight line would give it away as paper. Before fitting, dampen the paper lightly and let it settle to the shape of the undercoat; only then fix it with a thin layer of PVA glue. The paper bends better over an edge when the back is first run over with the blunt side of a scalpel. At the end unify the surface: a very fine wash into the hollows, a hint of dust with dry pastel around the perimeter and matte clear coat in a spray, which takes off the paper sheen. Do not paint over the printed pattern; choose the patina so that it stays legible.
It is a printed paper accessory, not a kit and not a decal. Glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
