Sleeping bag number 1 in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer MAiM is exactly the kind of small thing a scene's conviction rests on. Large pieces of equipment draw the eye, but it is the personal belongings of soldiers and travelers, a sleeping bag, a backpack, a mess tin, that tell the viewer somebody really lives here. The prop is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted.
A sleeping bag belongs in a field camp, on the bed of a truck, in a trench, on a bunk in a shelter and in the corner of an abandoned building where a civilian or a survivor of a post-apocalyptic world sleeps. Laid beside a fireplace it suggests a bivouac, rolled on a figure's backpack it suggests a unit on the march. The MAiM range also holds version number 2 with a pair of sleeping bags, so together you can easily equip a whole camp without the pieces repeating.
Folds of cloth are the ideal exercise in working with light: lighten a basic muted shade, olive, khaki or gray-blue, on the ridges of the folds with a dry brush and bring out the hollows with a fine wash. Avoid clean, saturated colors, because a sleeping bag in use is always faded and dusty. Final pigments in the color of the surrounding soil will link the prop to the terrain.
The accessory is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted. Paints and glue are not included in the package.
