About product

Hauler 1:35 Staghound Mk.III - a photo-etched accessory set

A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler for a kit of the armored car in the Mk.III version. It is not a model of the vehicle; the package holds accessory metal parts for a kit you already have, and it is cut for one particular kit, from Bronco. The set is one of those that do not change the shape of a model but markedly change the way it looks close up - on an armored car it is the grab handles, the eyes, the light guards, the handles and the thin sheet-metal stiffeners that are most visible on the surface of the hull.

The real subject

The Staghound was an armored car of American production with all-wheel drive, used to a greater extent by British and other Allied units than by the American army. It served for reconnaissance, patrol and escort duty and proved itself mainly thanks to its reliability and range. The Mk.III version was a rearmed modification in which the original turret was replaced by a turret of tank origin with a 75 mm gun. It arose as a field and as a workshop rebuild, so the individual cars differed from one another in detail.

Tips for the order of building and painting

With photo-etch the order of the work matters as much as the gluing itself. A simple rule holds: all the photo-etch goes onto the model before painting, never after it. Paint under a metal part will peel and the joint holds considerably worse. So first finish the whole structure including the metal parts, then degrease the model, apply a primer and only then the base shade. Prepare the parts that are painted differently - the wheels or the stowed gear for instance - separately and fit them at the end. If you are dealing with a camouflage scheme on the vehicle, reckon with the fact that masking tape is hard to press down over thin photo-etched elements and can tear them out when it is lifted; it is better to lift the tape slowly and at an angle away from the part, or to use a liquid compound for unmasking. At the end unify everything with a varnish and only onto that do the washes and pigments.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building Allied armored cars in 1:35 scale
  • builders of the Mk.III version with the gun turret
  • modelers with experience of photo-etch who want to refine the surface detail
  • those interested in vehicles with a varied history of service and color schemes

This is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit, glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory set for a kit, which has to be obtained separately.

In place of the original turret it had a turret of tank origin with a 75 mm gun fitted. The set is meant for exactly this form.

Always before painting. Super glue holds poorly on a painted surface and the joint comes loose in time.

Press the tape down carefully and lift it slowly and at an angle away from the part. With very fine elements liquid masking fluid is safer.
